Always great hearing from a previous painting customer, when another type of house painting is needed. We completed painting and staining a home in Boulder Colorado several years ago for a Doctor who lives in Boulder. Doctor who I will refer to as Steve, has a Cedar home, where we cleaned Cedar siding, and applied a semi-transparent oil stain. Steve called me back last week, asking if we did interior painting repairs, and siding board replacement, which I put him at ease, not needing to looking anywhere else. Taking care of jobs large or small, always glad to hear from our previous customers later down the road. Fortunate having this various home improvement knowledge, because it is always a great feeling

seeing our customers again, for what ever painting projects they may have.  Living, working, and painting in Colorado is like (I’m sorry to say if your in another part of the country) being on vacation every day, with views like this. Mountains in the distance is the Flatirons near Boulder, famous for their jagged sharp edges, and beautiful mountain colors carved in stone.

Always enjoying the drive, today was no different, stopping a moment, taking it all in, enjoying the area I’ve grown so accustomed to painting here in Colorado. This snow is the aftermath of Denver’s first major snow of Winter 2011, getting close to a foot in most parts of the Front Range, which our friends on the East coast is getting as we speak.

Woodpecker’s Trick or Treat

Meeting Steve few years ago, I was surprised going around back of his large home, looking over siding, figuring his free quote painting and cost estimate, what a neat and unique idea he had hanging up high under his soffits. Large deterrent spiders looking life-like hanging up high, dropping down, making a gurgling sound as we both walked to the rear of home, too bad it wasn’t before Halloween.  They are sound sensitive, dropping down approx. 5-6′ on a line, to scare off wood peckers, running on 2 AA batteries, working very well, as they did that day. This Doctor is a lover of birds, having several birds as pets inside his home. Matter of fact, as we looked over damage today, a Cockatiel resting on his shoulder my whole visit. Downstairs, looking over a few other items for repair, Dr. said “Oops”, hearing a little crap on his shoulder. Therefore assuming Steve having a close relationship with his pet, a lover of birds in general, thinking I would be doing much more than acknowledging my pet cut one loose on my shoulder. Understanding colors, I’ve included a color wheel to explain. All the hues you can imagine are derived from 3 primary colors, red, yellow, and blue titled with a P. When these primary colors are mixed in equal parts they create 3 more colors, we will refer to as secondary colors being orange, violet, and green. Mix these 3 colors in equal parts, and you have created 3 more being blue-green, yellow-green, yellow-orange, red-violet, blue-violet. Mix pairs of these 6 colors, and you have created 6 more, and so on to infinity and beyond.    Adding white, black, and gray can drastically tone down intense colors, thereby giving infinite color choices. First order of business would be which predominate colors you wish to highlight within your home or office, being Red, Yellow, or Blue. For real contrast, use colors from opposite sides of the color wheel, three in a triangle, or four colors in a rectangle. Opposite colors always catches one’s attention and focus. A touch of violet can spark attention in a room of yellow-orange. Adding a touch of red brick to a room of green can create a dramatic entry, in a dynamic space.

Refinishing kitchen cabinets the best and easiest way normally does not happen. Well it does refinishing Solid Oak kitchen cabinets and cupboards.

Another painting tip I’ve discovered here in Denver I would like to share with all. Being in business providing professional painting services for Denver Metro Area and Colorado for over 30 years, I took on a painting project in my own personal home last year, reveling what I have learned thus far.

Today, the cabinets, cupboards look just as good as the day I did this, so here we go.

Before we get into the best and easiest way refinishing kitchen cabinets, our Oak kitchen cabinets were not any different than most others in a middle income suburb home, with a family of four using them

on a daily basis. Our Oak kitchen cabinets were approximately 15 years old, having a deep Oak stain and Satin lacquered finish. Over time this lacquered finish became dull and dried out, especially around heavy trafficked cabinet drawers and doors.

Cleaning kitchen cabinets on a regular basis, this cleaning also took it’s toll upon the kitchen cabinet finish. Knowing that I had to do something, as the kitchen cabinets and cupboards were looking quite tired from a typical family, and had previously used this product sealing interior windows up in the Foothills of the Rockies for a commercial client, I said what the heck. I’ll try one small area, and if I’m satisfied with the results, I’ll do the entire cupboard door.

Being a year later, and no visible wear with normal wiping down dust, grease, and occasional food splatters, below is my discovery.

First, you will want to clean your kitchen cabinetry like there’s no tomorrow.

Cleaning Kitchen Cabinets

Cleaning kitchen cabinets properly is by far one of the most important things you can do starting this painting project off on the right foot. Knowing we are very clean individuals, any minor drippings from the sink area, grease from the kitchen stove, dust from the flour making chicken and dumplings the night before, all of this needs to be as clean as a whistle. You can clean drawer fronts and doors as they come off. Remembering to use a piece of masking tape, writing on each piece of tape numbering where each goes back. Once you’ve removed the hardware of each, it is time for the cleaning kitchen cabinets.

If you ever inspect something close up, it should be the cleaned cupboards and cabinets. Using a mild detergent, warm water, clean rags, and lots of elbow grease, your kitchen cabinetry will be ready for painting once dried. Would go as far as using a toothbrush dipping in soapy water, scrubbing into cracks and crevices where moldings meet at 90 degree angles. A very good cleaner that cuts the grease not leaving a residue we use is called Greased Lightening. Greased Lightening can be found in gallon containers at your local hardware stores.

Once dried, preferably overnight, your closer being ready to start the re-finishing process for your stained and worn lacquered cabinets and cupboards.

Here’s everything you’ll need to get it right the first time, many items you may already have.

Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets

Refinishing kitchen cabinets and spraying stains and lacquers is the very reason most people tend to look for another painting career. These paint products are very toxic, as well as the V.O.C’s (volatile odor contents) also allowing for very quick flash points, causing explosions and subsequently fires. Any way, I refinished all the kitchen cabinets in our home, taking approximately 2-3 hours to clean immaculate before hand. 1-2 hours removing hardware, laying doors and drawers out to put back in same spots. 1-2 hours brushing out all kitchen cabinet surfaces 2 days in a row, replacing door hardware and cabinetry doors and drawers taking 1-2 hours, for a total of 5-9 hours total.

Did not have to wear a respirator with charcoal filter, although keeping the area well ventilated, not having to clean up a sprayer either, making this the best and easiest and best kitchen cabinet refinishing project I’ve ever done, using my own kitchen as the test. Sikkens Cetol Door and Window

Sikkens Cetol Door and Window is a superior Clear finish that bonds seals and protects faded worn kitchen cabinets, as well as windows and doors. Should be hand brushed, using a high quality Chinese bristle brush. Brushing this product requires some fiance, as you do not want to get in a hurry. Using a 3-4″ Oil brush will speed up the brushing, as you take your time, making this all even. Must keep a wet edge, brushing several times, long strokes, 2-3 times in each spot, working it in. Better to go two light coats than one heavy, as this product tends to sag, not drying very quickly. Best to reevaluate your work 15-20 minutes after you have brushed a certain area, catching any sags with a quick light brush stroke, for a professional kitchen cabinet refinishing project.

I call it the Icebox, and I stand being corrected from those who have personal experience toting blocks of Ice from the Ice Truck back home of yesterdays gone by. Visiting us for Thanksgiving this year, I have another term to play a trick on, maybe shooting a video for that look of puzzlement using terms of days gone by. “Say Dick, can you fetch that loaf of bread in the cupboard and stick it in the Icebox?” So cabinets, cupboards are interchangeable terms both meaning cabinetry.

Cleaning Kitchen Cabinets

Cleaning kitchen cabinets properly is by far one of the most important things you can do starting this painting project off on the right foot. Knowing we are very clean individuals, any minor drippings from the sink area, grease from the kitchen stove, dust from the flour making chicken and dumplings the night before, all of this needs to be as clean as a whistle. You can clean drawer fronts and doors as they come off. Remembering to use a piece of masking tape, writing on each piece of tape numbering where each goes back. Once you’ve removed the hardware of each, it is time for the cleaning kitchen cabinets.

If you ever inspect something close up, it should be the cleaned cupboards and cabinets. Using a mild detergent, warm water, clean rags, and lots of elbow grease, your kitchen cabinetry will be ready for painting once dried. Would go as far as using a toothbrush dipping in soapy water, scrubbing into cracks and crevices where moldings meet at 90 degree angles. A very good cleaner that cuts the grease not leaving a residue we use is called Greased Lightening. Greased Lightening can be found in gallon containers at your local hardware stores.

Painting Cabinets

So having the correct knowledge from the start will drastically cut down time spent, using the time taking to paint cabinets to a more refined finish look. These reasons could entail remodeling, getting new counter tops, freshening or sprucing up, recent purchase of home, or getting ready to sell. A home’s cabinetry is one of the most important functions in a home, keeping organized, also getting the most use. Cabinets and Cupboards are one of the most expensive items a home possesses, so helping the home’s interior protection while updating the decor is easiest done by painting cabinetry.

Once filled, sand out to a smooth surface. One good way we use to determine if surface is smooth enough is rub the palm of the hand across the surface looking the other way. If nothing felt, surface is ready for primer and paint. Not painting kitchen cupboards just quite yet even though I know your ready to start dipping the brush and roller. Hold on cause there are a few other steps.

Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Paint kitchen cabinets takes several steps as mentioned. Unloading, cleaning, removing, filling, and now masking is next on the agenda. Remember to use Blue and or Green masking tape for areas of delicate finishes, as regular masking tape can mare lacquered finishes. You will want to mask, depending upon which kitchen painting method you intend using, more or less masking. If spraying, you will want to “Cocoon” the kitchen, dropping a curtain of plastic to make this as a spray booth. If not, brushing and rolling can take much longer, not to mention a smooth factory paint finish as you paint kitchen cabinets.

Painted Cabinets

Painted cabinets will add a new mystique to the room you enjoy the most. As the cabinets are being painted, pay close attention to keeping a Wet edge with your brush, roller, or spray tip. This painting tip will make your finished look be that much more professional and uniform. Another painting tip would be before you start, soak brushes and rollers in warm water, shaking them out, leaving the smallest amount of water left. This gives the paint a more even flow, and reduces the amount of build up on brush or roller. Also gives way to cleaning them much easier once finished. Taking long continuous strokes normally from top down, painting a lighter coat on uneven surfaces first, letting them tack up. Going over again when painting the smooth flat areas, will add to this paint uniformity. Taking these steps, you are insuring a professional look to your newly painted cabinets.

Re-Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Re-painting kitchen cabinets after the first paint coat has dried over 24 hours is recommended by most paint manufactures. Re-painting before this time diminishes the paint quality, as paint manufactures have spent millions on Research and Development (R&D), knowing how they’re paint reacts and performs. So don’t try getting in a hurry re-painting kitchen cabinets and cupboards. If you are just coming in at this point of the cabinet painting task, you’ll want to go back and follow previous steps listed before you start re-painting your kitchen cabinets or cupboards. Re-painting kitchen cabinets the second day should go much quicker as all the paint preparations have already been made, not needing to do these again. Following these steps, making sure you keep a Wet edge on paint, using a high quality brush or roller. I know cheaper brushes and rollers are available, but from a painting contractor’s experience, the added cost is minimal compared to the quality of paint coatings these higher priced brushes and roller skins leave to the final finish look. Purdy is by far one of the best manufactures of brushes and rollers, but there are others, just ask your local paint store. They can guide you to the correct thickness of roller skins, and brush sizes. Speaking to your local paint store while getting your paint does not hurt to letting them know you are re-painting kitchen cabinets.

Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets

Re-finishing kitchen cabinets will entail all steps mentioned above, but here you have some choices to make. Depending upon what paint finish you currently have, we will speak on the presumption that you have Stained and Lacquered going to an Acrylic enamel. Following steps above, here you will use a high quality high bonding primer such as XIM, this primer saves a very large step in re-finishing kitchen cabinets. Not needing near as much material, primer, and paint, you still want to follow steps of preparation, not skipping over removing the cabinetry hardware. Also remember several thin coats of paint is better than one thick one. Paint products normally have a hang time of a couple minutes, and putting too much paint on a vertical surface, you can see sags, runs, or drips occur.
