Cedar, Wood, and Siding

Walking into a paint store can be overwhelming, trying to decide which paint or stain coating you wish to provide your exterior Cedar wood and siding, as there are many varieties. The following outline is intended to prepare you, before buying any such products, knowing exactly which type fits your final outcome. Preparing exterior Cedar for painting or staining, a few important steps are involved to ensure lasting beauty and Cedar paint stain’s adhesion characteristics. Before tips are mentioned, would like to clarify the following terms

Tips Before Painting or Staining Cedar Wood or Siding

painting or staining Cedar wood and siding before we get into painting or staining tips, which are sometimes loosely thrown around in conversations when getting this work done, and would like everyone being on the same page.

Exterior Cedar Paint or Paint-Stain

First, painting freshly milled Cedar requires a paint stain, unless a 100% acrylic exterior primer is used first, thereby allowing a 100% solid acrylic paint to be used as final finish coats. If you do not intend on priming brand new Cedar or Redwood for that matter, a high quality stain paint should be used, as 50% of volume soaks into the wood, other 50% is left on top, as a dried paint mil. This stain covers all wood grain completely, and gives the wood an appearance of being painted. Either way of painting Cedar, whether priming first, then painting, or painting using a stain paint, both will receive optimum performance, but priming and painting will usually be 75% more in paint material costs, also having some other drawbacks listed below in table. Using a paint stain right off from the start, a primer is not required, and additional coats further down the road is much easier achieved. Secondly, using a 100% acrylic primer and paint, at some point this paint product will breakdown over time, and you could see fading, cracking, peeling, chipping, needing to repaint once again. Using a stain paint, only fade becomes an issue, wearing thinner over time, needing to re-coat. Knowing the differences of Cedar paint or paint stain, I tend to lean towards the stain paint, having this on my own personal Western Red Cedar home, enjoying the protection it provides, as well as re-coating say every 7-10 years.

Exterior Cedar Stain

Exterior Cedar stain is exactly what it implies, either in an oil based or water. Staining new Cedar requires a Transparent, Semi-Transparent, or Semi-Solid stain, if your intention is to still see the natural beauty of the wood’s grain after completing the staining process. Transparent has less product colorants, showing most of the wood grain, as do the Semi-Transparent stains covering just a bit more, as the Semi-Solids having the most colorants, giving the most uniform wood grain coverage, while still showing some of the grain to show through. The more the colorants, the more uniform, and consistent the boards will be. No primers needed using these stains, as they do not cover like paint, or paint stains. The linseed and turpentine oils soak into the wood, leaving many different hues and shades of wood colors left, which gives somewhat a wet darker look, until stain has cured and completely soaked into wood’s grain.

First Item before Painting or Staining Cedar

First important item to consider is moisture. Moisture is the main deterrent for all stains, oil or latex, from a moisture content within the wood itself and or weather conditions. Weather conditions include cleaning, power washing, rain, snow, drizzle, and higher than normal humidity ratings. Depending upon where in the country you live, and what the normal humidity ratings may be, applying exterior paint under the lowest humidity ratings is always recommended. Every city in our country has a normal humidity rating, and if not sure where you live, check with your local weather forecaster. Some areas of our country may never see humidity ratings lower than 70%, such as in New Orleans, Portland, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, San Francisco, New York, Miami, Houston, or other coast line areas, closest to large bodies of water. Relative humidity is probably the first factor people should take into consideration when painting Cedar siding, as well as others listed below. Denver on the other hand is ideal, having one of the lowest humidity ratings in the country, which makes painting and staining a real pleasure most times of the year, painting and staining Cedar wood correctly. Mentioning below some more very key points when considering staining or painting your Cedar wood exterior, never wishing “I wished I would have done that first”

Solid Body Stain Or Semi-Transparent

You have a real important decision to make, and once made, it is not impossible reverting back to another type coating, but requires a lot of work you did not think this out carefully, so this is why this is being mentioned towards the top, after determining best weather conditions, choosing which stain, solid body paint stain or semi-transparent, when painting or staining Cedar, or any other exterior wood for that matter.

Choosing Which Stain

There are basically two (2) types of paint stain for Western Red Cedar wood and siding. Various paint manufactures provide these options, and you really need to be aware before walking into a Lowe’s or Home Depot. Nothing against the paint clerks behind the counter, as they all represent the company’s philosophy helping paint customers, painters, and contractors, but many have not a clue what they are doing on the other side of the table, rarely ever seeing a paint can before, much less product knowledge. Now I know there are some, but going into a box store is like a crap shoot, never knowing what correct information you will get. Having correct product knowledge is your best avenue before walking in, choosing which stain to use. I can’t count on my right hand the number of customers who have told me the same scenario of walking in a box store, telling staff what they wanted, and planning to do, getting something totally different. Once you open the can of stain, even if it is a stock shelf item, not having to custom tint the stain, it is normally yours, and no returns, and if you start using it on your siding, makes it very interesting trying to blend something else over, being uniform. Therefore, knowing stain differences before making your selection, makes perfect sense, especially achieving desired results.

Solid Body Stain

Solid body stain is like a paint stain, whereby allows 50% of the stain to soak into the wood, the other 50% lays on top as a paint mil, thereby being referred to as a paint-stain. If your Cedar wood and siding already has this type of paint stain on it, you are required to put something very similar for a new coating. These paint stains can come in latex water borne, or Alkyd base and water clean-up. Either types of solid coatings are good, most having the words “Fence and Siding”. If your attempting to re-stain a deck, you guessed it, the words “Deck Stain” is highly recommended, as Deck stains have higher solids and polymers to last on horizontal surfaces. Don’t be chintzy, and go ahead and buy the more expensive Deck stain for decks, which it will last the normal period of time. Putting “Fence and Siding” stain on a deck may last only a year, if that, not getting near the performance otherwise. Applying Deck stain to Cedar vertical siding is not required, could be cost prohibitive, and not needed, but could very well be done, lasting much longer. As mentioned, this paint-stain or solid body stain can be applied to new or previously paint-stained Cedar wood and siding. This type of paint stain covers up the natural beauty of the wood, like a paint, so be aware. If you like the natural wood grain look, and you have new Cedar wood trim or siding, this product is Not for you. Solid body paint stain can be applied to previously treated Semi-Transparent or Transparent stained wood which has dried out over time, say a couple years, after a good power rinse is completed. However, once solid body stain is used, you Cannot go back to a natural Semi-Transparent or Transparent Cedar wood grain look, using Semi-Transparent oil stains very easy, without having to strip and remove all of the previous solid body stain off down to bare wood. Paint removal is a tedious and time consuming job, requiring much labor, time and money. So getting it right from the get-go is always best, never having to wish you would have chosen another paint or stain product.

Tip: Recommend finding a similar piece of Cedar or wood siding, and applying your stain of choice, allowing to dry, and studying the results before going further.

Semi-Transparent Stain

Staining Cedar with a Semi-Transparent formulation, normally comes in a oil, linseed oil, or water based mixture. Many manufactures provide a less colorants in stain, referring to just Transparent Stain, and Semi-Trans. Most of these products provide very good wood protection from the Sun, rain, snow, and wide range of temperatures. Once stained, these products repel moisture like water rolling off a ducks back. You’ll know additional Semi-Transparent application is needed when this water repelling is not occurring any longer. These types of product coatings will never crack, peel, chip, or bubble, as they soak into the Cedar, only leaving colored particles behind, coloring the wood. The only product on the market I would not recommend is Thompson’s Water Seal. Rarely do I speak negative about any product, but have seen many homeowners who have used this (from you guess it! a box store) and within 3 months, calling me for help, looking like they had never stained in the first place. This stain does nothing for protection nor performance, and is a waste of your time and money, costing the same if not more, than higher quality stains on the market. Will give a list of recommended stains later in this message in table.

Tips Before Painting or Staining Cedar

Tip 1: What Are The Current Weather Conditions

Besides relative humidity as the first consideration, when attempting to paint or stain Cedar wood siding or exposed Cedar in the outside elements is forecast of future weather conditions that could be approaching, while you may be in the middle of a finishing project. Estimating your time to complete this paint or stain project, looking into the forecast, picking out the best optimum window of opportunity. Depending on paint or stain product, some moisture may not be a factor as mentioned further into reading. But for the most part, when applying product coatings to an exterior wood such as Cedar, a quick glance at your weather forecast is a good idea.

Tip 2: Cleaning Cedar

Another quick determination is deciding if the Cedar wood siding is new or old. Will you be applying paint or stain coatings over new or older seasoned Cedar? Having brand new Cedar siding requires installation, as well as preparing it for accepting stain of any sort. Cleaning the mil glaze by power washing first opens up the wood’s grain, allowing proper adhesion and saturation. A good additive to use is TSP or Trisodium Phosphate. This chemical is widely used as a cleaning agent, stain remover, and de-greaser. It is a white powder, highly soluble mixed with water, which allows the wood’s grain to open up, and remove the saw blade’s glaze for new and older seasoned Cedar. With all chemicals and detergents, safety is the utmost importance, wearing gloves and proper eye protection when mixing and applying is always a good idea for worker safety. If Cedar is aged, having Grey weathered, and or ugly Black mildew all over, the best Cedar cleaner by far is Oxi-Clean laundry detergent, saving time and money, and is also a must before staining. Only difference between cleaning new and old wood, is new wood does not require much cleaning, as old discolored wood sometimes does.

Tip 3: When Painting or Staining New Cedar

With new Cedar wood siding, starting from scratch, as in an Artisan’s canvas, this surface area should be cleaned, and dried. Brand new Cedar wood and Cedar siding freshly milled, could have a moisture content too high accepting much of the product coatings your attempting to use. Highly recommend checking with your lumberyard where this is purchased, finding out the date it was cut and milled. Normally fresh cut Cedar requires at least two weeks after installation to dry out completely, especially if this was stacked outside in yard and not covered. Letting Cedar wood cure is the best recommendation for new Cedar wood and siding, and before applying paints and sealers.

Tip 4: When Painting or Staining Seasoned Cedar

Older, seasoned Cedar wood and siding is where your painting skills are evenly matched. Having painted and stained numerous structures having this exact wood, comes out flawlessly, once a few important steps are completed. No matter which paint or sealer product you are leaning towards using, working with seasoned older Cedar wood and siding, it is imperative to remove all the old flaking paint or if stained, removing all the old, dried, top layer of wood off by power washing.

Tip 5: When Painting Previously Painted Seasoned Cedar

As a paint or solid body stain ages, it tends to dry out and fade. All loose paint must be removed, as paint or solid body stain is not smart, and is only as good as the substrate it is covering. Surfaces must be scrubbed with a soap and water mixture, sometimes even using a wire brush. Not trying to remove every bit of old product coating, but to insure a sound adhesion is still taking place. After all surface areas have been cleaned, it’s time for the drying process to take place. When Cedar siding is vertical and installed, after power washing, normally a two-day allowance for drying is good to provide previously painted seasoned cleaned Cedar wood. Drying back out after power washing, not to be confused with brand new wood from the lumberyard. If Cedar siding was previously stained with a solid body stain, a good power washing is prescribed.

Tip 6: When Staining Previously Stained Cedar

Older Cedar wood previously stained years before can be quite a challenge. Especially if a Semi-Transparent or Transparent stain is being considered, allowing the natural beauty of the Cedar wood grain to show through, as this stain does not cover wood grain imperfections. If Cedar siding had a Semi-transparent or transparent stain, and your wishing the same type again, you may need to clean extensively with a wood brighter and cleaner, removing all the gray, black mildew away, for a brand new wood look. Best Wood Cleaner for Cedar wood and siding I have ever used, and will only use in the future is Oxi-Clean laundry detergent. This product not only saves time, it saves tons of money in the interim.

Tip 7: When Painting or Staining Previously Painted or Stained Cedar

Don’t want to sound like a broken record, but painting or staining Cedar siding and wood trim, previously painted or stained, it is imperative you know what was used before. A solid body paint stain used before, you will Not be able to stain with a Semi-Transparent or Transparent oil stain over a solid body, as this type does not cover the same, and you will have a living mess on your hands. Now, suppose a Semi-Transparent was used several years before, your able to apply a solid body paint stain, or go back with a Semi-Transparent one, but never the other way around, Semi over top of Solid.

Painting And Staining Methods of Application

Painting and staining can be a easy thought at first, but requires a lot of perseverance and dedication completing this home improvement in the most uniform and consistent amounts. Whether you are spraying, brushing, rolling, or back rolling product coatings, having the same amount applied is very important, especially working with stains. The Super Deck products, linseed oil based, cannot be applied too heavy, as wood’s grain may not allow all the stain to soak in, whereby leaving a thick wax-type coating on top, once dried, needing to be removed. Wood, especially Cedar soaks in stain over a period of several months, drying out at the same time, which is why you cannot put additional coats on too quickly, or your in for a real surprise. Applying solid paints and stains, refer to manufactures recommendations on the back of each can, and or each product’s MSDS sheet. Normally 100% Acrylic primers, a 6-8 mils thick, 100% Acrylic paint, 9-13 mils dried thickness, and paint stains needing at least 2-4 mils dried thickness. Careful, not applying solid paint stains too thick initially , as not only can they run, but eventually flake, crack, and peel. Additional stain coatings, will cause a build up so to speak over multiple coatings, which this is normal.

How to Paint Exterior Wood, Siding, and Trim

If your painting the exterior, or staining it, several commonalities are present with both. First, starting with a clean surface, a light power washing sometimes with a mild detergent is necessary removing all the dirt and grime. Replacing any deteriorated boards, siding, trim. This is a great idea and time, if your considering replacing any shutters, garage doors, or gutters, before painting the exterior getting this done first. Scraping any loose mils of paint, caulk, re-caulking for a weather tight seal. Re-nailing any loose nails that may have popped out over time. Followed by all the rest of exterior preparations, completing with an expert exterior painting or staining job. At Eco Paint, we provide the majority of wood repairs and replacements, and can get you in contact with other specialty companies for garage doors, roofing, gutters as an added bonus, if needed.

Consider Which Paint or Stain Products

Considering which paint or stain to use from the start is the best avenue to take, not having to Re-do, starting over, as each additional coating applied, is working in conjunction with the other, giving maximum protection. Important knowing if you want to still see the wood’s grain, or cover up like a paint. Several pluses and minus are listed below in a chart for your quick reference, determining which one to choose. Followed by a quick list of Top Paints, and Stains in our country available for Western Red Cedar. I personally like the beauty of the Cedar’s wood grain, but this wood must have some form of paint or stain protection, if it will last decades.

Martha Stewart’s Living Paint,

Being Replaced

10/27/11

Martha Stewart Living™ Home Paint is on clearance at all Home Depots across the country, loosing this major contract. Never used Martha’s Living paints, I have used Glidden’s, and very satisfied with coverage, and price. Martha Stewart Laying Off 40 Employees this past Friday in Fishbowl NY, in her Living advertising, marketing dept. called the Omnimedia group.

This is a huge loss for her empire, with biggest

box store distributing her line, I’m sure. Have nothing against Dear Martha, we have never used her paint ither. Also knowing the strongest will survive especially in this economy, Martha is very smart, knowing when to cut back.

Normally when we paint for customers across Denver, they either request a certain type of paint, being Benjamin Moore™, Sherwin-Williams™, Kwal Howell™, or Glidden™. If they want our personal preference, we will choose, but have never picked up Martha Living as this is a signature type of paint, just like Ralph Lauren™, or Calvin Cline™. Personally, I have never wanted a pair of jeans painted on my walls, using Calvin Cline, but suppose each to their fancy.

First Noticed Martha’s Living Paint On Sale

Walked into one Home Depot, picking up some paint sundry items, and first noticed several gallons of Martha Stewart’s Living Paint interior flats, eggshell, and even semi-gloss, along with her exterior line of paints on a clearance table near the paint department. Did not think anything about it, making my purchase, and leaving. This was Monday I believe, I was busy going to and from various painting jobs our different crews were painting, this discounted paint did not interest me, even at a lower price. Why? Not using before, and have heard various others who have, not getting all that good of performance and paint coverage on original paint coat. Therefore, noticing Living Paint on sale, my eyes looked elsewhere.

Replacing Living Paint With Glidden

Yes, I found myself in another Home Depot Store, again at the Paint dept. 2 times in 1 week, hey I’m setting a record, normally getting most of our paint and supplies who caters to contractors more than over the counter retail sales. Anyway, I was in Louisville, needing a color matched from Behr in a solid body stain, not having color number off hand, this took a few moments locating it. During the course of my visit, speaking with attendant, he told me about Martha’s paint on clearance. He continued to tell me, what ever does not sell by Mid-Nov. Home Depot’s would be drastically cutting prices, moving her paint out of there, across the country, replacing with Glidden. This made sense, seeing a store across town doing the same, understanding the reasoning. Purchased a few more gallons of Behr stain, taking to painters, painting a home’s exterior in Louisville. I have to believe Glidden, being the largest paint company in the world, owned by AkzoNoble™ is very pleased getting Home Depot’s account back from several years ago, loosing out to you guessed it, Dear Martha Living.

Putting Two and Two Together

After seeing two Home Depot’s in different parts of Denver, with Martha’s Living paint on clearance, I knew this was a big loss for her, and her company. Later the next night, on the Huffington Post, seeing latest news of her company laying off 40 workers, I knew this was attributed to the Living Paint account with Home Depot. Hate to see anyone loose a job, cut business, loosing income, no matter if I’ve ever used the product or not, wishing all those affected Best Wishes and Luck, knowing first hand, loosing Living Paint contract was the reason behind layoffs.

Get ready to see Glidden’s line of house paint products and coatings in all the Home Depot’s across the country very soon, taking it back from Martha.

When Martha Stewart’s Living Paint Looses Lowe’s Gaining Home Depot

12/07/09

Dutch paint manufacture AkzoNobel, who is located in Strongsville, US said Monday that it has landed a deal to produce a line of Martha Stewart-branded paints for Home Depot.

This paint manufacturing facility is one of three that is producing the newest paint line. This facility currently makes several Akzo paint brands, including Glidden, Ralph Lauren, and Devoe.

The paint deal comes as Stewart’s exclusive contract with Lowe’s and Minneapolis paint-maker Valspar ends this month.

Eric Stasiowski, an Akzo spokesman, says the company worked with Martha Stewart and Home Depot to develop a new paint formula specifically for the Martha Stewart Living brand. He said it will be different from previous Martha Stewart paint products, which were only her colors applied to an existing paint line.

The new paint is low in fumes, and will come in distinctive packaging, Stasiowski said. It also, of course, we be available in line of colors approved by Stewart herself.

Exterior House Painting Saves Thousands

Ever hear that cliche “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”? Well, from a painting contractor’s standpoint, “A gallon of paint, is worth thousands of dollars”. And what I can tell you, not painting an exterior will cost you much more in the long run. Yes, we may be in tough economic times, but instead of buying that

new flat screen TV, or new iPhones for the whole family, you may want to take a close look at your exterior siding. Investing in the maintenance of your home will save your family thousands down the road.

Yea, I can hear it; “This guy is in business to paint exteriors, so naturally he’s going to say “Paint it”. Absolutely not! What I will tell you is, I’m hear to help my local community with one service many do not like doing themselves, applying paint coatings professionally, seeing many exteriors not getting painted, being way overdue, thereby deteriorating beyond restoration, needing replacement, costing much more than keeping up with a fresh quality paint coating for one’s trim and exterior siding.

Helping Local Residents, Painting Exterior Homes

Helping local residents with painting one’s exterior or interior for that matter, we gain a tremendous degree of satisfaction helping our community, transforming a dried, faded, and sometimes flaking paint, to better than new condition. Starting back right out of High School, partnering up with a H.S buddy I’ll name Carl, we remodeled a local Disco, named J. Raggs in Dallas back in late 76 after graduating. This was the start of something that has inspired me doing ever since, over 30 years. Painting countless homes over the years, also seeing many areas of wood, and exterior sheathing or siding deteriorated, we’ve also replaced this, as an added feature of our painting services, again helping our local residents, having this knowledge of home improvement. Not only do we paint, but we make recommendations, as this is our area of expertise. Never feeling like I know too much, always like to be on the cutting edge, eager to learn more. Knowledge gained is free, and helping our local community in house painting, siding repairs or replacements, or information I can relay, trying to work with everyone’s budget, is what we do best, getting the most enjoyment.

Painting Exterior Sheathing vs. New Wood Siding

Painting New Exterior Cedar Siding or Sheathing

Painting exterior siding on a regular 10-15 year basis, opposed to never painting siding until it is so dilapidated it must be replaced will cost much more in the long run. Many who never paint siding, have also not thought that once siding is replaced, it must be immediately painted, costing even more than replacing siding alone. What many do not understand is the exterior sheathing is the outer layer which keeps and protects the contents and occupants inside. This outer layer receives the brunt of all weather conditions your area dishes out, rain or shine. Most new siding comes pre-primed, ready to receive exterior paint coating. If the new siding never receives coating over primer, it’s set up for disaster. This is why most decide painting new siding, over primer; To protect the new siding for many years to come.

Re-painting older siding is a real plus, extending the life of that current siding you already have in place. Let me repeat; If you do not re-paint current siding, your siding will deteriorate, sometimes beyond restoration, requiring replacing with new siding, thereby costing much more in the long run. Having a quality painting contractor apply a professional exterior paint coating is much cheaper, that the alternative, removing old, replacing with brand new siding, saving thousands in the long run. Yea, most would conclude, some saying this is profound, but I wanted to put some actual numbers to this philosophy, showing in black and white, in a clinical blog table, if everything is the same. Same siding, same exterior paint, same contractor, same everything, only expanding the size of home, as naturally a larger home will cost more than a smaller one.

Changing Motor Oil Similar to Painting Home’s Exterior

Cannot stress enough, where ever you live in the country, painting your exterior should be top priority, instead of thinking of new siding whenever that may be. I know there are some who never change motor oil in their cars, as I have met only a very few. Those same people never give another thought of painting the exterior sheathing or siding of their homes either, getting back to the infamous cliche mentioned above.

New Vinyl Siding is Cost Prohibitive

Right, vinyl siding can be painted, lasting years, having a fresh new exterior house color, as we have painted many. However, installing vinyl siding, the cost is so prohibitive, one would need to live in their home 35-40 years in order to pay for it’s self, not having to ever paint the exterior again. Well, this calculation will be in the next chart I plan writing. But for now, this chart below does not include vinyl, only original quality wood siding that came on your home when it was built. And yes I’ve outlined in my table a comparison using 45 years from an exterior paint standpoint, knowing the fact every home must have some sort of siding, and protecting to last this long or longer, fresh new paint is key, and not installing vinyl siding to cover-up the initial problem, knowing at some point, your vinyl siding Will be painted, either by you, or the next owner of your property. As you can probably guess, I’m against vinyl siding, as it is flimsy, moves with the wind, cheap plastic that hardens and cracks as it ages over time. Furthermore, wood is much more durable than vinyl when it comes to hail storms.

Cheap Vinyl Siding After Hail Storm

A.) Not Painting Exterior Siding

Never painting exterior siding, there is zero painting costs associated with this, including scraping, caulking, priming, and weatherizing your exterior. However, you will be replacing, or having us or someone else replace your siding if you elect not ever painting it, becoming deteriorated that no paint will magically improve. Matter of fact, when we paint an exterior, our first SOP (standard operating procedure) is to power wash. With siding crumbling off in one’s hand, a light power rinse would tear this type of siding up to smithereens.

√ Paint is not smart. Paint is only as good as the substrate it is covering. Therefore, if someone asked us to paint this siding above, sure we could do it, for a price. Only difference is, if we were to paint this siding, no warranty would be issued, not even a week, no matter what type of exterior paint we would use. Life-time paint will crack, peel, and flake off just as quick as 15 year paint, knowing the siding has that Apple Pie Crumble on bottom.

B.) Siding Replacement Costs-Highlighted in Red

Siding replacement costs are a direct result of not painting exterior siding or sheathing on a regular basis. National average wood siding costs per liner feet to remove, dispose, and replace new siding, which includes fasteners, vapor barrier under-lament, trim boards, labor, proper siding equipment and tools. Average home is considered 2000 sq. ft. of floor space. Calculating siding costs all the way up to 3000 sq. ft. as most homes fall within these living space averages. Sure there are much larger homes, and siding costs goes up proportionally for painting and or siding replacements.

C.) Required External Painting Cost

This is where I mentioned above, any new siding replaced is required to receive new exterior paint immediately after replacement, adding to the initial cost of replacing the siding. You just can’t get around it. All exterior siding is required to have a fresh pliable paint coating to protect the wood fibers underneath. Once new siding is replaced, the next important step is painting it, so you don’t have to replace this expensive feature of a home again! So, this required external painting cost for new siding replacement must be considered.

D.) Siding Repair Costs, if Maintained-Highlighted in Blue

Best Scenario

If siding is maintained properly, there rarely would ever be cost involved for replacements. Maintaining this external sheathing is best achieved by you guessed it, keeping it freshly painted. As paint ages, it dries out, usually fades first, becoming brittle. Any movement of siding caused by winds, temperature changes, will cause this aged paint to crack, peel, chip, and flake off, exposing the wood underneath. Once this happens, moisture is allowed into wood, thereby causing swelling like a sponge, deteriorating beyond repair. If siding is painted on a regular interval, this deterioration will never happen, and subsequently never having cost associated with repairs, being zero.

E.) Normal Exterior Painting Costs, over 45 years

Best Scenario

Generally speaking, a good quality exterior paint coating should last 10-15 years. With the advancement of paint’s chemistry by Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Glidden and Valspar, exterior paints are lasting much longer today. So only needing 3 exterior paint jobs from today, fast forwarding to 2056, your exterior siding should not need replacing any time between now and then. Initial external paint costs may seem to hurt the pocketbook in the beginning, but your pocketbook will look much more handsomely 45 years later.

Knowing the term “Saving” is money not spent otherwise that would eventually cost you much more. Being proactive in your home improvement protection is key to saving real money in this day and age, and professionally painting one’s exterior does just that. Saving over 400% of your money, I can’t think of a better way of preserving one’s home, saving thousands in the process.

Signs Knowing When to Paint an Exterior Home

Several areas to look at determining if your exterior siding or sheathing needs painting. First, knowing how exterior paint reacts to the outside, and different weather conditions from intense Sun, to Rain and Snow is very helpful. The first sign exterior paint will show needing re-painted is fade. Yes, all paints have a tendency to fade, and exterior coatings fade much more quickly than interior ones, because of the extreme temperature changes, and UVA, UVB rays.

First Signs of Paint Failure

No Paint Company, Warrants Paint Fade

This is a very important painting tip to be aware of. I don’t care if you have just purchased the most expensive, double life time exterior paint made, if you carefully read the back of the can, limited manufacture’s warranty does not include paint fade. And again, paint fade is the first sign of a paint’s deterioration and chemical breakdown. What many top paint manufactures do warrant is the paint’s ability to adhere properly, as long as substrate is cleaned and sound. Most people can name these as chipping, cracking, peeling, and blistering. However, no paint in this world is not above, not fading. Therefore, keeping a fresh elastic weather-proof coating prohibits moisture from penetrating siding underneath. In the picture above, moisture did just that, through nail shafts, as the exterior paint first faded, then broke down, becoming flat, loosing it’s sheen and luster. Moisture staying inside, not drying out, Masonite™ siding opening up like a sponge, becoming brittle all within a few years, with nothing to do but replace it. Once exterior paint shows fade, you had better start thinking of having your home painted!

Painting a Residence in Boulder has it’s Deterrents

Always great hearing from a previous painting customer, when another type of house painting is needed. We completed painting and staining a home in Boulder Colorado several years ago for a Doctor who lives in Boulder. Doctor who I will refer to as Steve, has a Cedar home, where we cleaned Cedar siding, and applied a semi-transparent oil stain. Steve called me back last week, asking if we did interior painting repairs, and siding board replacement, which I put him at ease, not needing to looking anywhere else. Taking care of jobs large or small, always glad to hear from our previous customers later down the road. Fortunate having this various home improvement knowledge, because it is always a great feeling

seeing our customers again, for what ever painting projects they may have. Living, working, and painting in Colorado is like (I’m sorry to say if your in another part of the country) being on vacation every day, with views like this. Mountains in the distance is the Flatirons near Boulder, famous for their jagged sharp edges, and beautiful mountain colors carved in stone.

Always enjoying the drive, today was no different, stopping a moment, taking it all in, enjoying the area I’ve grown so accustomed to painting here in Colorado. This snow is the aftermath of Denver’s first major snow of Winter 2011, getting close to a foot in most parts of the Front Range, which our friends on the East coast is getting as we speak.

Woodpecker’s Trick or Treat

Meeting Steve few years ago, I was surprised going around back of his large home, looking over siding, figuring his free quote painting and cost estimate, what a neat and unique idea he had hanging up high under his soffits. Large deterrent spiders looking life-like hanging up high, dropping down, making a gurgling sound as we both walked to the rear of home, too bad it wasn’t before Halloween. They are sound sensitive, dropping down approx. 5-6′ on a line, to scare off wood peckers, running on 2 AA batteries, working very well, as they did that day. Woodpeckers on this side of Doctor’s home being tricked and not treated.

Birds Can Cause Damage to a Home

Well, Steve did not have large as dinner plate spiders hanging on South facing wall, where they felt much safer, drilling a large hole towards the top. These destructive little endangered and protected birds can cause hundreds of dollars damage to a home, if precautions are not followed. Woodpeckers makes this home improvement siding repair, a very popular job we include in our exterior painting program we offer Colorado residences, knowing they cost tens of thousands of dollars, adding up all residences affected by these birds, on Colorado’s Front Range. Figuring the initial cost of this deterrent, could realize a 4000% investment, figuring spider costs $15.00 and average siding repair costs $600.00, one can quickly see the advantages being proactive against this destructive creature.

Other Bird Damage

I have seen other examples of pigeons roosting at one particular house or another in Colorado, causing very unsanitary conditions around the immediate exterior, and gutter systems. Having to power wash with a good bacterial cleaner is always recommended in these circumstances. Once removed, remains make great fertilizer for one’s yard, but do not know many who would like putting up with the mess until then. In this case, a large plastic Owl or Hawk placed near by, in conjunction with chicken wire is usually a good remedy.

Best Woodpecker Deterrent

This Doctor is a lover of birds, having several birds as pets inside his home. Matter of fact, as we looked over damage today, a Cockatiel resting on his shoulder my whole visit. Downstairs, looking over a few other items for repair, Dr. said “Oops”, hearing a little crap on his shoulder. Therefore assuming Steve having a close relationship with his pet, a lover of birds in general, thinking I would be doing much more than acknowledging my pet cut one loose on my shoulder. Either way, I still think this woodpecker deterrent is the Grandest, at Steve’s home in Boulder, or any

Glad in a sense, nature gives way to business, always looking forward helping the next woodpecker victim, but have to give best wood siding tip, deterring such destructive creatures that I have found. Maybe we can go in business stringing these bad boys up, keeping woodpeckers at bay, for those needing. Give us a call, be glad to help your wood siding repairs, and installing the scary eight legged arthropods on your home in Boulder and Colorado, being the most favorite trick or treat spot on the block.

Bird Deterrents Make Perfect Halloween Decorations

If your considering Halloween decorations, and your home’s siding is wood, this is your best option next year. Seeing the aftermath, the woodpeckers made nest in wall, raised young, and left. What was next put the icing on the cake, and main reason Dr. called me back, seeing him today. Squirrels took over hole, going to bottom of wall inside, eating away Sheetrock, coming inside home! Dr. told me as he was trying to put a cover over hole inside room, a squirrel objected, sticking his nose through hole inside the room, Dr. had to force-ably shove determined squirrels nose back, to place cover over the gaping hole. Of course that did not stop the squirrel, making several more holes in drywall, that we will be fixing his home, skim coating, matching drywall texture, and painters painting interior home in Boulder for this Oncology Doctor. Wild animals can play havoc on one’s home, if necessary deterrents are not in place. These spiders are well worth every penny, saving hundreds in the process, not to mention a favorite Halloween spot in the neighborhood.

Boulder Has Other Painting Deterrents

Other deterrents while painting homes in Boulder, could be on a much grandiose scale. Always looking over your shoulder, especially on a ladder, have never seen a big cat. Have spoken to many who have heard these cats from a distance, being respected to say the least. While there may be deterrents to protect one’s home, or deterrents keeping one’s home painted, the pluses far outweigh the negatives, enjoying the crisp mountain air, scenic beauty, friendly atmosphere which makes up Boulder, Colorado, and the Front Range.

paint color choices, the choices are limitless. House of colors, paint decorates for a more to a softer, Earth tone natural setting, with more contrast from walls to ceilings and trim, giving new life into a home. From repainting every room, to adding color accent walls, there is no limit to the number of ways to transform your living space with paint colors. Every so often a new paint color trend is set for the most current painting standard, and keeping up to date will add beauty to one’s decor, not to mention adding value and protection at the same time, as an added bonus. Bringing new colors into the home adds to the personal tastes, embracing other color coordinates such as carpet, furniture, draperies, art, roofing, brick, and cherished collectibles for coordinating your home’s paint colors. After reviewing this blog and attached videos, it is my hope this will stimulate your imagination bringing more colors into the living space you enjoy the most. Setting in motion the correct paint colors, tints and hues, will lay the groundwork creating the mood within the home or office, two places you spend most of your time. House colors can inspire all those nearby, giving the sense of accomplishment and success.

House Colors Everywhere

House colors everywhere in your surroundings. Take a look around at each and everything, as they all have color on every surface. Wood tones can vary from reds and browns, to orange and yellows, to light grays. White surfaces generally have some colorant to them, but up against a deeper contrast, they appear to be pure White. Having a touch of yellow, green, blue or red can bring more warmth and contrast to other colors you bring to your walls and ceilings, while Off-Whites are generally used for trim and doors.

Color Wheel

Understanding colors, I’ve included a color wheel to explain. All the hues you can imagine are derived from 3 primary colors, red, yellow, and blue titled with a P. When these primary colors are mixed in equal parts they create 3 more colors, we will refer to as secondary colors being orange, violet, and green. Mix these 3 colors in equal parts, and you have created 3 more being blue-green, yellow-green, yellow-orange, red-violet, blue-violet. Mix pairs of these 6 colors, and you have created 6 more, and so on to infinity and beyond. Adding white, black, and gray can drastically tone down intense colors, thereby giving infinite color choices. First order of business would be which predominate colors you wish to highlight within your home or office, being Red, Yellow, or Blue. For real contrast, use colors from opposite sides of the color wheel, three in a triangle, or four colors in a rectangle. Opposite colors always catches one’s attention and focus. A touch of violet can spark attention in a room of yellow-orange. Adding a touch of red brick to a room of green can create a dramatic entry, in a dynamic space.

Paint Color Tip

An important paint color tip which should never be overlooked is once you’ve figured out which paint colors to use, either interior or exterior, it is a very good idea to sample larger swatches of paint on the walls to see if that is what you envisioned, seeing them in all parts of the day and evening, as the Sun plays an important role in the tints and hues of many house colors. Picking out the right paint colors the first time, saving time, labor, and of course money. Normally, most qualified painting contractors will be happy to assist in these sampling procedures.

Interior Room Painting Color Ideas

Interior Paint Color Ideas

Interior paint color ideas and paint color schemes are the first things to think about before considering painting one’s interior. If you know you want your interior painted, but have no idea of design or layout being the paint scheme, no worries. A qualified painting contractor in your local area is the best choice. He or she knows current paint trends, and the most popular interior colors soothing to the most decrementing tastes. If your home is 10 years old, and walls, trim and ceilings have never been painted, chances are paint scheme is out of date. Perfect example of this going from a stained and lacquer trim to a more bright painted one. Stained trim was very popular back in the 80′s and 90′s giving way to a more modern updated look in the 2000′s. Well let’s see if this one hits home, and if so, can tell on your age. Interior paint color ideas and paint schemes once included glitter mixed in Popcorn ceiling texture. Remember!? Today, even Popcorn ceiling textures are a thing of the past, without the glitter of yesterday. A more current paint color idea lends itself to a more current standard of matching wall texture to the ceiling for a more uniform and cleaner look. Even with the same drywall texture being the same, instead of walls and ceilings painted the same, a more current paint scheme is walls painted one color, and ceilings painted another. This paint scheme costs a little more, but well worth it if this is your primary residence. If a rental, you may wish to paint both walls and ceiling the same color scheme, for different interior paint color ideas.

Bedroom House Painting Color Ideas

Interior Paint Scheme

Must mention there is no “Cookbook” of right and wrong paint color schemes, however one must keep uniformity and consistency in mind when figuring a new paint scheme in the home. Interior paint scheme is the layout of paint colors which make up a space. Understanding these color wheel possibilities, opens the doors for interior wall painting color ideas, that will add a personal touch to your decor. Paint colors can create a desired atmosphere either in a bedroom, dining, kitchen, or family room. Colors have the ability to solve concerns as in a confined space, or adding warmth to what could be a chilly room otherwise. If you balance the intensity of colors in a room, referred to as paint color scheme. For a soothing space, keep colors gentle, light, and muted. For an active room, filled with energy, more bold, deep based color accents are recommended. Light is a paint colors best friend, which can alter the color’s perception after the Sun goes down. This is described further above, in Paint Color Tip. A good rule of thumb is having all trim the same throughout the home, normally in semi-gloss or high gloss paint sheen. Providing this paint sheen allows for regular cleaning with mild household cleaners, not compromising the paint finish. Another good idea for paint schemes in a home is providing the same ceiling color throughout. This trend of ceiling white throughout is currently in the process of changing as we speak. Having a distinct break in one’s ceiling or room can allow more pastels to one’s ceiling, which is becoming more popular in much larger, expensive homes in our country. Your interior design ideas can easily come together, hiring the right interior painters and paint contractor in your area, for a professional look, saving time, effort and money, applying your interior paint scheme.

Interior Paint Colors

Interior house paint colors that are on the lighter spectrum, gives the sense of being much larger than it really is. Darker house colors, appearing much smaller. Lighter tint based body exterior house colors tend to give off a larger feeling, as darker deep bodied ones, the home appears to be smaller. House colors and their house painting colors combination, leaves the color chart wide open for possibilities. House colors for a personal taste and decorating choice. Holding all house colors in the same family, warrants all house of colors paint coincide with one another, complimenting, as well as giving different color distinction and contrast for colors in the home. Darker color accent colors tend to highlight something and bring notice, as lighter ones tend to blend in surroundings. Notice darker gray accented to the lighter gray stairway with a navy blue runner for a cozy family setting in a Mid-Atlantic or Western Denver home. These interior paint colors will endure future generations of enjoyment.

Bathroom Paint Color Ideas

Exterior Paint Color Ideas and Paint Schemes

Taking a Drive for Exterior Paint Color Ideas

Exterior paint color ideas and painting schemes will bring new life and vigor to one’s exterior siding. Exterior paint ideas may include natural landscape surroundings or if in a HOA, exterior paint color combination choices. A good exterior paint color idea is driving around your subdivision, picking out the exterior paint scheme you enjoy the most. You may still need to get this approved by your HOA building committee, most look at paint color schemes rather quickly, always eager to improve the subdivision where you live. Many considerations should be given when choosing exterior paint colors, from your local community to landscaping and roof colors. Many different shades of roofing are available today, and with exterior paint color ideas being infinite, the choices are limitless.

Exterior House Colors, Exterior Paint Colors and Ideas

Paint Color Brochures for Exterior Paint Schemes

Another exterior paint color idea is looking at different paint manufacture’s brochures helping your paint scheme. As you open the exterior color brochure, most paint color samples are grouped together with 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 colors of the same hues and tints, suggesting all these would look good next to one another. Using any more than 3 exterior colors can be overwhelming, unless of historic nature. Typically a body or field color is used throughout, with second paint color painting trim around windows, doors, gutters and flashing. If a third color is used, this normally accents front doors, shutters, and any gable vents or round inserts at the roof line. A nice touch is accenting any diamonds at the top of gables on the facia, which covers two pieces coming together. All these popular color choices laid out next to one another on most paint color brochures, displaying exterior paint schemes you may like.

Ask a Paint Color Expert

Asking a paint color expert or exterior color coordinator is always a choice when changing current exterior paint colors. If your new to an area, finding a reputable painting contractor who has been painting several years in the area is a good start. Most of the time a painting contractor will provide this service for free or can vary from area to area. Local paint stores who provide exterior paint color brochures can also be of some assistance. These folks tend to agree with anything you like, rarely being committal and divisive. A good question to ask them they can give you a straight answer is; Which is your most popular exterior colors? Nothing against any retail salesmen, but generally they do not wish suggesting anything you may change your mind on later, as once the paint is mixed, it is non-returnable. The main thought here is just asking a paint color expert, the one’s in the know, especially painters and painting contractors, who use these products on a regular basis. Seasoned painting contractors of your area are your main source being paint color experts, knowing which ones provide the best coverage, durability, consistency, and uniformity.

Exterior Paint Colors

Exterior house paint colors vary from one particular neighborhood to many different types of exterior siding material. Most exterior paint color schemes tend to be that of an Earth-tone paint color combination for a rich and inviting properly cared for exterior. Understanding paint colors, and what the outside elements can do to any particular paint is worth noting. The darker the exterior paint color spectrum goes, the quicker the paint coating will last. Intense sun’s rays can play havoc on paint, no matter what quality paint is purchased. Most exterior paints last much longer than the warranty noted, but all paint manufactures do not warrant paint fade. Paint fade is the first sign paint is not protecting, starting the deterioration process. Knowing this little known secret, it is best choosing the lightest paint color combination for the longest duration. Adding the least amount of exterior paint color additives before the painting process begins, allows for the best paint coverage and exterior protection. Aha, have you ever painted, never feeling like it was covering? Most likely the paint you were using contained tons of paint colorants. Very important, paint colorant does not cover, the base does. Deep purples, and the brightest Yellows are the toughest to cover, requiring many many coats before coverage starts to take place, costing much more labor and paint. Painting your home’s exterior will go the extra mile, with fresh, pliable, and elastic paint coatings. Always good to sample paint colors for your exterior which are being favored, making sure they blend with brick, roofing, and vegetation. Knowing painting an exterior is not normally done very often, it is always good choosing these exterior paint colors wisely from the start.

Today, we will be speaking specifically of the free ones, as most like anything that is free, as long as it works, it is good.

Tip: Click on img. above, join, and I can receive points!

Promoting one’s business to bring potential customers to your door, is what business is all about. Without customers, every business will surely die. Every business requires time and effort for a successful venture, as I’m not one who thinks I only need to put in a little, gaining the most. Therefore, my business philosophy is one that; The more online web presents, the better. Directories similar to Merchant Circle, Yelp, CitySearch, and the Yellowpages of the net, all have their individual pluses and minuses, but all build inbound links back to your site, which is important, climbing the internet ladder of search results. Popular directory listings now integrate social media, connecting the two accounts, for greater exposure.

Thumbtack Web Directory

Thumbtack online website directory is your number 1 connection to CraigsList, where businesses can advertise most of the time, free of charge, which has made CraigsList extremely popular over the last 10 years. Other directory services such as AddsUp provide a very similar service to CraigsList, but charges anywhere from $100-200.00 per mo. who builds a nice 5 page web site, and maintains for this price, I suppose. The major difference between the two is the almighty dollar, one being Free, and the Other costing to maintain it on a monthly basis, with no long term contract. With those who say “No long term contract”, sounds great at first, but the moment you cancel, all information goes into the trashcan as well. With a Free listing, there is no question of a long term contract, similar to MerchantCircle, as I’ve maintained my membership listing since October 2008. I happen to like what ever works better, and Thumbtack is your answer for the Web’s Newest Online Search Directory, with all the latest tools for online marketing.

Building a Profile

Adding company history and contact information is a breeze at Thumbtack, not wanting to stop. Watching my point count go up with each additional feature added. Building our company profile was really neat, adding multiple pictures and videos. Knowing how responsive the Thumbtack site is, gives me a clue how well the content will be indexed by the major search engines. I could be wrong, but highly doubt it.

After completing your profile, your ready to receive appointments 24/7. Thumbtack has State of the Art marketing tools, including a direct link to CraigsList for online ads, along with testimonials, widgets, and company verifications for your customers viewing pleasure.

Thumbtack is not your typical online search directory, as the Web is constantly changing. Thumbtack is your new source of online search, where you can vet, contact, and make appointments the moment you find the service or products your looking for. Thumbtack is the new iphone of online search, and is a must for all types of businesses on the Web today. Having nothing to loose, but spending your time, your time spent building a profile on Thumbtack is not loosing anything, but gaining the more you provide.

Eco Paint is now on Thumbtack

Eco Paint now on Thumbtack is one of the best moves we’ve made recently. Thumbtack having the most current and cutting edge marketing tools online today, Eco Paint could not be happier. Having been painting homes, offices and businesses for over 30 years, a painting contractor you can trust for all of your painting needs, large or small, in Denver and Colorado, Eco Paint is extremely happy stumbling upon Thumbtack.com yesterday.
painting contractor’s viewpoint and experiences, from Denver CO. Just as car manufactures change paint colors for autos on a almost a yearly basis, so do house paint manufactures. Having a current exterior house paint color improves the appearance of the home, making like new, but most importantly having the proper paint protection to your valuable exterior siding and trim. Knowing one does not repaint, changing the color of the external paint scheme on a drop of a hat, choosing a paint combination you will enjoy for years to come is vitally important.
Exterior House Paint Colors Video

Ideas When Determining Exterior Paint Colors

When choosing exterior paint colors for your home, several considerations and ideas should given.

First, if you live in a covenant community, certain exterior paint colors may be the only ones approved for those homes in that particular community. Consult with your HOA if not sure, knowing they are happy to assist providing you with approved paint color matches and ideas.

If your not in a controlled HOA community, you still may want to sample exterior paint colors on your home, as small paint chips do not give the full picture of a larger paint sample next to your brick or other colors near your home. Lighting also plays an important role when looking at paint colors, and this can be different in a store or on a piece of paper, rather than actually on siding or trim. If you are changing colors drastically, best to sample paint colors on your home before telling your paint contractor or paint store to mix the full amount, as this cannot be returned, and very difficult changing to another paint color match.

When choosing exterior paint colors, getting samples from other similar painted homes you like is a good idea. If you see a home’s paint color combination that is appealing to you, ask home owner if they know of the paint color names or numbers. Most of the time homeowners will go out of their way helping you with numbers, as this is a compliment to their exterior paint color choice. Have seen once in my life where this happened, not as explained. Our painting customer liked a paint color combination of a home 1.5 miles away, with 300 homes in between them. Our paint customer went up to the door, asking if they could have the paint color numbers or names, and this individual was reluctant providing, as they thought these 2-3 paint colors were their very own. Hard to imagine paint colors having a patent.

One more thing to think about, when choosing exterior paint colors for your home, is looking around at the colors of your natural surroundings. Trees, soil, grasses, landscape all lend their natural Earth tone colors to the pallet of colors to pick from. Take a look at your roof and brick or stone. These areas can be major portions of your exterior, that offer nice possibilities of color family choices. Remembering painting a home several years ago outside Castle Rock, nearest the foothills. The owner of the home, Jim, was also the owner of Fairfield Homes, for which we previously painted many homes and multi-family projects for them. Well, the owner decided to go with colors of Green for the body, and a burnt Red, closely matching the natural sandstone in the area. Jim’s home is situated closest to the foothills, near lots of outcropping sandstone, which the paint color combination made perfect sense. So, looking at your natural surroundings is ideal, especially not confined to an HOA’s paint color combination.

Many brochures have paint color combination choices. When opening these various brochures up, the 2-3-4-5 paint swatches grouped together is suggested by the paint manufacture as being like in nature, going well with one another. This does not mean your not able to pick from one group, adding to another. These are only suggestions.

Last, If you are planning on other exterior home improvements besides painting your exterior, such as replacing garage doors, gutters, siding or trim, best having these completed before painting. Inspecting trim and siding before painting exterior for possible deterioration is key, keeping everything running in the natural order of construction and exterior painting, saving time and money. Doing things in the proper order allows the most time saving means of completing everything as scheduled. Including wood repairs and siding replacements as a part of our specialty, adds to the convenience of only having to deal with one contractor for siding, wood trim, and exterior painting.

Exterior Paint Scheme

Exterior paint scheme are the colors that make up the paint color combination. Typically you have a 2-3 paint colors that make up the exterior paint scheme for a home.

First color found in the body or main portion of the exterior, where the siding is painted. Other portions of the home’s exterior could be the garage doors, most soffits, porch ceilings, awnings, trellises, side entry doors.

Trim paint colors tend to be found on the facia and gutters, as both of these should match exactly, as you do not want to bring attention to gutters, but camouflage them, making them blend in. Other areas of trim paint colors could be found with window and door trim, columns, posts, flashing, decorative dental work for a complete exterior home design and paint decoration. A third exterior paint color may be found at the front door, wood side vents, or an ornament decoration near the peak. Fascia diamonds that cover the seam at the top of some gables, as these can be painted a third paint color we call accent paint color.

Accent paint colors can be vastly different from the color wheel, and the main or body and trim color, which brings attention to these areas. Need to be careful, not overdoing the accent color of any exterior, as the exterior paint scheme may look too busy.

Green Earth Friendly, Paint and Materials

Denver painters, painting homes using, Green Earth Friendly, sustainable paints and materials even more today, than since it’s inception back in 1999-2000. This is Great News, Thanks to many Denver painters and painting contractors getting the word, as well as local paint stores, informing the public of the advantages of Going Green when painting homes across Colorado. What used to be a trademark of a typical

liberal Green environmentalist, is now including most, liberals and conservatives alike, being politically by-partisan, painting homes today, with these purchases of these Low to Zero V.O.C (Volatile Odor Content) Green Earth Friendly paints. Therefore there are no stereotypes of a particular race, religion, gender, and politically motivated group, now including all folks today, of all walks of life, painting more and more homes in Denver using Green Earth Friendly paints and materials. Knowing the advantages of using these newer formulated, interior painting products, it is easy to see, Going Green is a wiser choice, painting homes, no matter where you stand on other political issues.

Top Reasons Denver Painters Using More Green Earth Friendly Paints

Reasons Denver painters are now using more Green Earth Friendly Eco Paints vary from one household to another. Whether the reasons being paint costs, air quality, breathing concerns, family additions, or advocacy groups, or just informing the public.

Denver painters are painting more and more homes, than ever before, using Green Earth Friendly Eco Paints, as the Green Earth Friendly paints are now starting to catch on, as Denver homes realizing the benefits using Green Earth Friendly paints.

Green Earth Friendly Paint Costs

From my perspective, as a local painting contractor here in Denver, knowing painting costs is the primary question of most, I can put that question to rest. Green Earth Friendly paints cost the same as premium quality interior paints still on the market today. Typically a high quality interior paint from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Glidden, Valspar, Behr, Kwal-Howell, Devoe all range from $30 to $50 dollars per gallon. With that being said, so does your high quality paints having higher V.O.Cs, if all other paint concerns are met, using Green Earth Friendly Eco Paint makes perfect sense. Having same or better paint coverage, uniformity, and paint color retention, your Green Earth Friendly Eco Paints are by far superior.

Using Green Earth Friendly Paints Improves Air Quality

Using Green Earth Friendly paints improve air qualities if considering painting interior walls and ceilings. Of course they do nothing if no interior painting is being considered. However, getting ready to paint an interior, this type of paint should be considered, as it does nothing to lower the air quality in the home or office. Air quality is one important consideration for many, and that “Fresh Paint” smell can have major allergic reactions to one’s bronchial passages. The conventional interior paints give off ammonia and formaldehyde releases for up to 3 years inside a home. When a home is freshly painted with conventional interior paints, our noses get used to those “Fresh paint” smells within a week or so, not noticing the chemicals still being released into the home, unless of course having allergic implications to these chemicals being released. So, when painting an interior, using Green Earth Friendly Eco Paints, improves air qualities inside the home.

Breathing Concerns are Important When Painting an Interior

Breathing concerns are important when painting an interior. This can include people with asthma, increasing symptoms related. This can be a part of occupational asthma and or Allergy-induced asthma. Keeping the air quality at it’s highest, reducing any chemicals, fumes or gases is always suggested. Remembering these interior paints having higher V.O.Cs, although may smell good, do nothing, and will actually reduce the air quality within the home. Other breathing concerns important when painting an interior could include bronchitis, hay fever, obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. Other breathing problems may also stem from other serious problems such as lung cancer, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and lung disease related to HIV/AIDS. Being able to enjoy a freshly painted interior, non of these breathing concerns will be compromised or affected using Green Earth Friendly Eco Paint.

Painting Interiors for New Family Members

In Denver, painting interior homes for new family members has been the leading reason using Green Earth Friendly Eco Paints. Getting ready for new arrivals, 5 of the last 6 interiors we painted were for just this reason alone. Wanting to bring fresh new paint colors into one’s home for the infant here in Denver, is always a positive attribute as a parent. Painting a child’s room with paint colors children love the most is an added benefit, learning their colors, while using Green Earth Friendly paints. Other interior painting for new family members can include a mother or father coming for an extended stay, say for a summer or winter, or providing family care. We all tend to clean, dust, putting our home’s best conveniences forward when entertaining. Having a fresh new look for either one of these examples, is very popular. Looking out for the very best with new family members in your home, painting interiors for new family members, using Green Environmentally Friendly, Eco Paint is your best course of action, Denver Colorado being no different than the rest of the country.

Advocacy Groups Promote Green Earth Friendly Interior Paints

Advocacy groups promote everything being Green, as Green Earth Friendly Interior Paints being 14% of the total Green Movement for sustainable Green Living. Solar, Wind, Food, and other home products make up the rest of Green Earth Friendly products. Typically when someone hears an advocacy group speak of “Going Green”, many jump to the impression this will cost much more, like twice as much. Well, Great News in the house painting industry, as described. These Green products do not cost any more than premium quality interior paints you would ordinarily pay and use anyway. Allowing yourself to contribute to this Green Earth Friendly Movement, right along side many advocacy groups promoting the same Green Earth Friendly interior paints, doing your fair share. Seems like everyone who uses these newer formulated interior paining products, mentions this to a neighbor or friend at some point within the coming year, stating how please they were with these newer paints and Denver painters. Thereby adding to the long list of advocacy groups promoting Green Earth Friendly interior paints.

Denver Painters and Painting Contractors Informing the Public

Denver painters and painting contractors alike, now informing the public, as this is the hottest thing Going Green in Denver. Denver painting contractors and painters both are always looking out for the public’s best interest, suggesting these Green Earth Friendly paints as a choice, not costing any more, than conventional brands and types. These Eco Friendly types of paints cover much better than the others, while retaining vivid colors much longer. Building public awareness using these types of Eco Paints makes it perfect for many reasons mentioned above. Still needing to spread the word, many interior painting customers either do not know benefits, or have not heard of interior painting choices. This is where Denver painting contractors and painters alike are helping spread the word, informing the public, saving our environment, one home at a time, with little or no increased cost painting interiors in Denver and Colorado.

Free Exterior House Painting

Siding repairs and replacements normally does not include free exterior house painting in Aurora Colorado from any painting contractor, but this week we were able to combine the two home improvement projects for one of our Service Magic painting customers, discounting the exterior painting of new Masonite™ siding, being free. Having your attention, your painting contractor, Eco Paint will go into the utmost importance, keeping a fresh external paint on your home’s siding, no matter what type siding you may have. Having written several articles in the past, this one exemplifies exactly what I have been preaching all along, saving you time and of course money. Knowing we all like saving money,

spending it on things we enjoy, exterior house painting not being one of them. Getting a free house painting job is not your typical or ordinary cost estimation for home improvements, so having this exterior knowledge below will save you thousands of dollars in the long run. Always working with one’s budget, we were able to come to an agreed price doing both, adding a second painting of an exterior home at regular price to boot. Both of us feeling like we are winners with the work and custom home improvement painting costs.

As a painting contractor here in Denver/Aurora, one cannot read any materials found here on this blog or web site, without reading the phrase “House painting adds value and paint protection”. With this most recent exterior painting job in Aurora Colorado, it is a testament to my zeal and aspirations of Exterior Paint Protection. Below, we will be focusing on one of the most common exterior painting surfaces in Colorado, which kept up and maintained, will last a life-time. Just like changing oil in a car, keeping oil changed on a regular basis, you will get tons more miles and life out of it, than never changing it. Same goes with paint, and your exterior house painting and siding in Aurora, gaining many additional years of home protection of the outer layer which protects the most valuable contents inside, being You!

Maintaining Your Home’s Exterior Siding

Maintaining your home’s exterior siding is an area that usually requires painting to some degree or another. The largest portion of a home’s exterior is normally referred to in a house painter’s language is body. The body of a home is the exterior portion where a typical siding material is found. Other portions of a home’s exterior can include exterior doors, windows, trim, vents, and shutters. Maintaining and painting all exterior surfaces, especially the body is mandatory for lasting quality and sound substrate.

Painting Masonite™ Siding

Painting Masonite™ siding makes up the majority of a home’s exterior painting, which this man-made product derived from natural wood fibers, most common siding in Colorado. These fibers are compressed, molded and shaped into a strong and durable sheathing, protecting the contents within the home. Normally this siding can be found at your local home improvement stores, Lowe’s and Home Depot. Various sizes and widths may need to be special ordered, as individual locations may only stock certain sizes. Most Masonite™ siding comes primed, having a gray tint paint color, allowing for a quality exterior painting.

Understanding Exterior Paint

Understanding exterior paint and how it ages over time will make perfect sense to the necessity of painting Masonite™ siding for a fresh, new, protective paint coat on your home’s exterior siding. Any exterior paint, no matter what quality and warranty it may have, ages over time. This aging process occurs over different climate temperatures, UVA/UVB rays of our Sun, and moisture, drying back out. All major paint companies spend millions of dollars each year on Research and Development (R&D) testing their paint products, making sure they live up to the qualities and warranties provided. The longer an exterior paint keeps it’s elasticity and tensile strength, the longer paint protection it gives the siding and exterior surfaces or substrates. Once this elasticity is gone, the paint becomes hard and brittle, which is when it can crack and chip. An exterior paint does not have to crack or chip before it looses it’s protection characteristics. Once this paint hardens, moisture can get through it, through tiny pores, like your skin, and through any fasteners used to attach siding to the wall of your exterior. A good clue determining if this exterior paint is in need of repainting, one could see paint fade. Before going any further, I’d like to stop right here, and mention something very important from a paint warranty standpoint. If you read any back of any paint can, no matter what quality it may have, you will see, there is no paint manufacture who warrants paint fade. Knowing there is no way they possibly can warrant a paint fading, because of the colorants used, and where the siding is located to various climate, weather exposures, and directions they face, this portion of a paints quality is not covered from a warranty standpoint, although a very good determination it’s too old. This is where so many exteriors get left in the dust, not maintaining, because not understanding exterior paint’s attributes and characteristics, “Well, it’s not peeling, so ok”

NOT!

New Siding Replacements

New siding replacements are prescribed when this exterior paint has “Seen it’s last days” as well as the siding it was protecting. Once the paint protection is gone, leaving the Masonite™ siding compromised and exposed, this type of siding swells out like a sponge. The more “Swelled out” it becomes from it’s original thickness, the more deterioration and less cohesiveness it has, crumbling with the least amount of resistance, just like a rotten termite infested piece of wood. If not replaced, no paint will last it’s recommended length of time, none. Repeating, paint is only as good as the substrate it is covering. Sure, from a distance a new exterior paint job will look fine, but just don’t walk up close to the exterior, hoping a young neighborhood kid does not hit a baseball over on this surface. With the structure of material compromised, this baseball would leave a dent, just as would marble-size hail. This deteriorated siding must be replaced with new if your planning on keeping it, or even if your not. Selling a property with this siding replacement still needed, would short sale your value immensely, not retaining full value of a home. Keeping home value and protection at it’s highest, on occasions, new siding replacements may be necessary, or at least repairs.

Siding Repairs

Siding repairs on occasion will properly maintain what is already damaged if some swelling has occurred, nails sinking in, but certainly not bring it back to it’s original condition. The best house painting technique repairing siding is filling in nail holes that have sunk in using Crawford’s Exterior Spackle. This comes in a quart can, and is easily applied using fingers and a damp/wet rag, wiping off excess, drying to a flat finish. Filling in nail holes with anything else, like latex caulk does not permanently cure the problem, and from an aesthetic point of view, making it much worse over the duration. As paint ages and dries over time, the satin paint sheen flattens out to a dry flat paint finish. If caulk was used say 10 years prior, filling nail holes, that portion will continue to stay shinny, giving the appearance of a ••• Polka-Dotted ••• siding, as the paint ages and flattens out over time.

Free Exterior Paint Job in Aurora

Getting a Free exterior house painting job in Aurora Colorado is rarely unheard of, especially in today’s market. Both my customer and self were both trilled we were able to combine the two. Exterior siding is much more expensive to remove, replace, and dispose of old, we were able to comp. out the exterior painting of this home on Pagosa Way, charging normal exterior siding installation, having a brand new substrate to work with, and honoring the paint’s warranty. Keeping the exterior paint fresh and new, will add many additional years of siding protection as previously described above. If new siding was not used, and only paint, this paint coating would not have any warranty whats-so-ever, being only a temporary fix to an on-going concern. Exterior painting along with new siding can add up very quickly, and trying to work with everyone’s budget, my heart goes out to everyone, helping all those who need this siding and painting service, protecting one of their largest investments, a home. Certainly not charity, giving away a free exterior paint job in Aurora, but also not charging a premium price when allowed.

In Summary:

Exterior Painting and Siding

Heritage Web Design Closed it’s Doors

Yes, Heritage Web Design closed it’s doors yesterday. The same ones who built our custom html web site where this WP Blog is showing on, as well as many other companies web sites, closed it’s doors on 3/08/11. Taking a deep breath, realizing all the clues leading up to this closure from my perspective, being in touch with them on almost a daily basis. Certainly not giving any warning to customers and probably not their many employees, I hope the best for everyone there. On an individual basis, every person who worked there was extremely helpful and courteous, wishing all employees of HIT All the Best. Believing I’ve made several friends in my journey with HIT, would welcome hearing from each once again. HIT being one of Google’s Top 25 Web Site Design companies, one of the main reasons I choose them back in 2009. Just hope they complete the minor tasks I’ve paid for, or at least refund my money, but doubt either one will happen, considering the closing and all which goes with that.

Heritage All Washed Up

HIT as a company being very deceitful trying to sell me additional

hosting last week, “Buy 2 years, get 2 years free”, knowing full well they were closing their doors yesterday, really shows their true colors. Fortunately I did not buy into their hosting scheme, having 11 months to go, and holding a carrot over their heads completing work I’ve already paid for, before buying anything else. Now if that was not enough, getting my goat, this next one will.

Originally thinking a misconception between sales dept. and myself purchasing additional hosting, I was charged, but never giving authorization for charge, they quickly refunded the next day when I demanded. Hours later, my site PaintingDenver.net/ was back to it’s original problems I had face for months prior, calling them on the carpet once again, having to fix it once again, over same server issues, properly populating to the web. Thinking it’s all fixed now!

Heritage is Doing Something Right

At least HIT is doing something right by forwarding all data files and user info to a “What appears to be” reputable hosting company. Fiber net taking over Heritage Web Design Sites. Calling Fibernet today, the day after HIT’s closing doors, felt much better, even though this is a big transition moving everything over. Currently having no access to back office or C-panel, nor FTP files, this uncertain period is like treading a swamp infested with alligators, not knowing exactly next step to take. Feeling much better speaking with technical support from Fibernet, leaving phone call with a much better picture.

Have you had a Similar Experience?

Have you had a similar experience with a Web Designer and Hosting company going out of business? What did you do, and how did you do it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. All this closing shop stuff is way out of my league of expertise, knowing every site should be updated regularly. Knowing I should be patient, and will take a chill pill, but needed to get this out there, for 1) Answers to my questions and 2) Giving everyone reading who may have sites affiliated with HIT’s some reassurance no matter how hard it may be right now.

Comment below, knowing we all will get through this one way or another
