• First, if you live in a covenant community, certain exterior paint colors may be the only ones approved for those homes in that particular community. Consult with your HOA if not sure, knowing they are happy to assist providing you with approved paint color matches and ideas.
• If your not in a controlled HOA community, you still may want to sample exterior paint colors on your home, as small paint chips do not give the full picture of a larger paint sample next to your brick or other colors near your home. Lighting also plays an important role when looking at paint colors, and this can be different in a store or on a piece of paper, rather than actually on siding or trim. If you are changing colors drastically, best to sample paint colors on your home before telling your paint contractor or paint store to mix the full amount, as this cannot be returned, and very difficult changing to another paint color match.
• When choosing exterior paint colors, getting samples from other similar painted homes you like is a good idea. If you see a home’s paint color combination that is appealing to you, ask home owner if they know of the paint color names or numbers. Most of the time homeowners will go out of their way helping you with numbers, as this is a compliment to their exterior paint color choice. Have seen once in my life where this happened, not as explained. Our painting customer liked a paint color combination of a home 1.5 miles away, with 300 homes in between them. Our paint customer went up to the door, asking if they could have the paint color numbers or names, and this individual was reluctant providing, as they thought these 2-3 paint colors were their very own. Hard to imagine paint colors having a patent.
• One more thing to think about, when choosing exterior paint colors for your home, is looking around at the colors of your natural surroundings. Trees, soil, grasses, landscape all lend their natural Earth tone colors to the pallet of colors to pick from. Take a look at your roof and brick or stone. These areas can be major portions of your exterior, that offer nice possibilities of color family choices. Remembering painting a home several years ago outside Castle Rock, nearest the foothills. The owner of the home, Jim, was also the owner of Fairfield Homes, for which we previously painted many homes and multi-family projects for them. Well, the owner decided to go with colors of Green for the body, and a burnt Red, closely matching the natural sandstone in the area. Jim’s home is situated closest to the foothills, near lots of outcropping sandstone, which the paint color combination made perfect sense. So, looking at your natural surroundings is ideal, especially not confined to an HOA’s paint color combination.
• Many brochures have paint color combination choices. When opening these various brochures up, the 2-3-4-5 paint swatches grouped together is suggested by the paint manufacture as being like in nature, going well with one another. This does not mean your not able to pick from one group, adding to another. These are only suggestions.
• Last, If you are planning on other exterior home improvements besides painting your exterior, such as replacing garage doors, gutters, siding or trim, best having these completed before painting. Inspecting trim and siding before painting exterior for possible deterioration is key, keeping everything running in the natural order of construction and exterior painting, saving time and money. Doing things in the proper order allows the most time saving means of completing everything as scheduled. Including wood repairs and siding replacements as a part of our specialty, adds to the convenience of only having to deal with one contractor for siding, wood trim, and exterior painting.

Exterior Paint Scheme

Exterior paint scheme are the colors that make up the paint color combination. Typically you    have a 2-3 paint colors that make up the exterior paint scheme for a home.

• First color found in the body or main portion of the exterior, where the siding is painted. Other portions of the home’s exterior could be the garage doors, most soffits, porch ceilings, awnings, trellises, side entry doors.
• Trim paint colors tend to be found on the facia and gutters, as both of these should match exactly, as you do not want to bring attention to gutters, but camouflage them, making them blend in. Other areas of trim paint colors could be found with window and door trim, columns, posts, flashing, decorative dental work for a complete exterior home design and paint decoration. A third exterior paint color may be found at the front door, wood side vents, or an ornament decoration near the peak. Fascia diamonds that cover the seam at the top of some gables, as these can be painted a third paint color we call accent paint color.
• Accent paint colors can be vastly different from the color wheel, and the main or body and trim color, which brings attention to these areas. Need to be careful, not overdoing the accent color of any exterior, as the exterior paint scheme may look too busy.

Exterior Painting Tips

Denver Colorado and Front Range offers several days painting exteriors throughout the year, even during the Winter months. Below, a few tips painting during these times. Denver and Colorado house painting season is normally Spring and Summer, and is generally thought as the best time to paint. While inside, most people think of interior house painting services during the Winter months, all for many different reasons. Exterior house painting is on most minds during this time. Enjoying more time outside, homeowners have the ability to inspect exterior siding and paint. Although painting in Denver, mild Winter temperatures in Denver and Colorado Front Range, painting the exterior of a home or business can be accomplished year round. In Colorado’s high country, this is a different story.

Only Spring, Summer, and early Fall months are best suited for exterior painting in Colorado’s high country, with high snow drifts, freezing temperatures, and uncertain weather conditions. Not allowing to paint until the snow is off the roof tops.

A little more creativity is given during Winter months, finishing exterior painting in Colorado. The following items require more creativity painting from October to February in Denver and Colorado’s Front Range, which also allows advantages painting the exterior during the Winter months.

This photo was taken just after finishing an exterior painting job in Parker, and a day after a few inches of snowfall. The roof is quickly melting, and all this snow is soon to be gone, allowing another premium time to paint during the Winter, providing another snow fall is not around the corner.

1) Shorter days - Normally Denver painters like to start from 7-8am.,  and as early as possible painting a home’s exterior, however as Colorado time changes around Halloween in late October, Denver painters must wait till 8-9am. to start using exterior paint. Halloween is the countdown time we normally see our first snowfall, sometimes a few weeks earlier or later, October can offer some amounts of snow. Surface temperatures are generally 10 degrees cooler than the ambient temperature, thus requiring a 45 degree temperature to apply exterior paint.

2) Follow Sun rays - Following the Sun’s rays is the best way to insure warmest substrate temperature during the Winter months, just as being the opposite from Summer months, Denver painters always look for the coolest side, out of the Sun to apply exterior paint. In the direct Sun, surface temperatures are generally 10-15 degrees warmer than shade,  making it perfect to paint in direct Sunlight during the Winter season.

3) Waiting for snow to melt - Most thoughts of Denver Colorado and tons of snow fall, is the same as everyone in Texas wears a Cowboy hat, however this is certainly not the case for either state. On rare occasions, Denver and Colorado’s Front Range receives it’s share of snowfall, as we desperately need it. Although, with Colorado’s arid and low humidity climate, Snow fall is gone in a few days in direct Sunlight. Painting the exterior, all snow must be off the roofs, not having to wait very long for this to happen, as rooftops are generally in direct Sunlight.

4) Low Temp Exterior Paint - Painting a home’s exterior during the Winter months, a good characteristic in a high quality exterior paint is having a Low Temp additive mixed in the paint. Sherwin-Williams and Kwal-Howell provide  these additives that come pre-mixed, adding to the value and durability of paint and it’s curing. Low Temp additives are invisible and paint quality is not affected. The only difference allows quicker drying rates, as in all house paint, paint dries slower in cooler temperatures, than warmer ones. Painting a metal door during these temperatures should be dealt with some constant observation. Applying exterior or interior paint for that matter should be done during the warmest part of the day. Allowing the paint to cure and set-up before temperatures start to drop. Metal surfaces tend to conduct and hold ambient temps. the longest, whereby not allowing the paint to dry before it runs or sags. I know, because I’ve been there. Generally the front door is the last thing to paint on an exterior, but not so much during the Winter. Exterior Front doors should be painted during the most optimum weather conditions and temperatures.

5) Exterior House Paints - In Denver, painting one’s exterior, Colorado offers premium exterior painting conditions, in all seasons. Having a very dry and desert climate, it is very rare Colorado has high humidity, and ever a concern. A home’s exterior house paint generally dries to the touch within 15-20 minutes on an optimum day with 55 degree temperatures. This time tends to increase the cooler it gets, and is the main reason most Denver painters shut down painting operations around 3-4pm. during the Winter time, giving ample time for the new exterior painting coatings to dry properly, before the temperature drops to their lowest through the night. Knowing proper exterior paint drying rates is a plus for a long lasting exterior painting finish.

6) Exterior Touch-Ups – The best advice painting interiors or exteriors is using the same method first used. This can be done by spraying left-over product back into the paint can, which allows a brush touching up a spray finish much better. Touching up paint finishes should also be accomplished during the same or close to the same temperatures first used. These areas can affect paint color sheen, so keeping accurate records and notes of a painting project is always a plus.

7) Exterior Painting Costs - Painting a home’s exterior during the Winter time is generally the same as the peak painting season, although taking a little longer painting an exterior due to reasons listed above. There may be particular reasons to paint during the Winter months, such as buying or selling a home, adding a paint color to personalize one’s exterior, and all this can be done just as easily as warmer months, adding a couple more days to finish than the Summer has to offer, while exterior paint pricing should stay the same year round, as most painting contractors, would agree.

Well folk’s painting season is right around the corner and being here in Denver, and still pretty chilly. Unlike our friends in warmer climates, down passed the Mason Dixon Line, house painting is very seasonal. Normally not painting exteriors say after October. Heck, I remember getting a 4′ snowfall around Halloween. Fortunately not in the middle of an exterior painting job. Having to time these types, always checking local weather forecasts.

Anyway, wanted to know from a homeowners perspective and others including painting contractors, what are your plans this year, knowing both will be different answers all together. Might be a good place  connecting the dots if homeowner responds here in the same town as painting contractor. Long shot, but it could happen I guess. lol Getting little cabin fever, I’ll be glad when the painting season kicks off.

So thought I would ask a few questions, allowing anyone to sound off. Either Homeowners, Real Estate Brokers, Mortgage Brokers, and or Painting Contractors. Well, anyone having anything to do with a home.  Only one’s I can think does not include,  are the tent people of Haiti.

Starting with the Homeowner;

• What are your plans for painting your home this year? Interior Painting, Exterior Painting or Both?
• What part of the country do you reside?
• Have you ever had a Professional Painting Job done before?
• What are your expectations?

Finishing up with the Professional Painting Contractor;

• Has your marketing changed in the last say 3-5 years?
• Has your territory stayed the same, increased or decreased?
• What sets you apart from all the rest in your area?
• Are you specific to house painting, or taking on other home improvement tasks?

Sounding off first;

Now just for the record, we only provide house painting services up and down the Colorado Front Range Area of Denver, Colorado Springs.  Answering first, yes we’ve honed our marketing skills to more of a web presents than ever before. Giving tips to my fellow brothers in house painting, we’ve spent our slower painting season months building up and improving our web presents. Reason being, is that when the painting season is here, I may not even have the time to wipe my nose, like years past, and hopefully 10′ is no different. Yes Sir, I’ll probably be tweeting on my Blackberry, and not behind the flat screen. Our marketing angle is somewhat different maximizing web presents, in that we will drop out of most print material. The future is the Internet, seeing newspapers falling like hitting flies on a dirty picnic table, same goes for the yellow pages.

What sets us apart;

Ok, and so what sets us a part, just coming to realize in the last few years, having been painting over 30, a brick fell out of the sky, conking me on top of my head, coming to the realization we are indeed an authority in the painting industry. Oops, now I’ve got to proof it. lol Rats! J/K. Continuing to speak on what sets us a part from all the rest is another realization. Naming our company Eco Paint Specialist’s back in 1993, long before Green Earth Friendly Eco Paint was ever available to the retail market, we are indeed the originators of the term Eco Paint. With somewhat of a slowdown in the economy, we have increased our territory, keeping as busy as we possibly can. Now including Colorado Springs to the mix, about 45-50 miles South of Denver. We cover 50 miles North and 50 miles South of Denver. Having the extreme enjoyment of house painting, helping others protect one of their largest investments, we have traveled the whole state of Colorado when need be.

And finally, we have not added to our home improvement skills, doing all now as before. If a board is rotten (we occasionally see this) we replace it, and not paint over it, or say call the carpenter with a hammer.  Many times homes that go way too long before painting can require siding repairs as well, doing that also.  Other painting services include Deck Cleaning, Staining and all Finishes. Providing Drywall textures and repairs, Wallpaper Removal, Siding repairs and replacements, and Lead Abatement & Encapsulations. Epoxy Floor Finishes are also common, upgrading garage floors are quite popular especially in Colorado with all the snow, making cleaning the garage floor a breeze. (got one more to do this coming week)

Twitter’s most Famous Painters

Looking deep in Twitter’s paint bucket, finding the most active House Painting Accounts listed below. List is not rated in level of importance, grade point, value. Just a great collection of some great Twitter users that I follow and suggest that you do too! If you like my post please sign in with your Twitter or Facebook accounts in the comments section and leave your comment below. I believe Twitter to be a great network of internet-savvy people. I have personally made quite a few great connections already and will be an avid Twitter user for a long time to come. I’d like to recommend a good source to rate an individual twitter account’s value is What’s my Twitter Account Worth, along with Twitter Grade. Having reached some interesting conclusions with House Painters and Twitter, without using either one of these helpful apps above.

• Probably not listing all painting contractors, as many new accounts are made each day on twitter, and I should perform searches more frequently. Placing all found in  Painting Denver’s House Painter’s List, listing around 99 individual Painting Companies.
• Out of List, only 7 follow this list.
• Out of List, approximately 20 reciprocating followings, building friendships in either same towns, or across the nation, right Tom? Tom and I are pretty tight, bouncing things for our web sites, house painting techniques, helping each others SEO. Kelloggs Painting in NY, me in Denver.
• Many twitter accounts are made one day, some of those being painting contractors and house painting, then never tweeting on a regular basis, and following back, so is part of Famous Painters ranking equation.
• Some may be active, but not following, possibly thinking of being competitors, maybe reveling trade house painting secrets, I have not a clue.
• Being here in Denver, making several friends who also are in the same industry, many of us may have never met without being here on twitter, right Larry? JSYK, Larry and All Phase Painting and  I share the same town, and has added great enjoyment to my twitter experience. Thanks again, Friend!
• Then some just may not enjoy twitter, and see no great benefit having this type of social media account.

No Direct Competition:

Yes, I’ve been guilty first starting my twitter account, being reluctant following,  befriending socially with similar businesses in the past. But seeing what twitter is all about, knowing we are all not in direct competition, twitter account brings down all of these barriers. Giving out relative current information, the strongest will survive in 2010.

Grouping together is not really happening on twitter, as we do on RemodelQA and Real Estate Brokers do on Trulia. This helps search engine optimization, building content. 3 magic words with SEO. Content, Content, & more Content! Your site will quickly start ranking higher in page rank on various search engines, while building in-bound links for every post. Building good SEO is a having a well balance of many various forms of content.

If your listed on a List, Follow that list! You get credit seeing all posts from one’s list, but does not count against your maximum following number, which you will not be thrown into twitter’s sandbox, not able to follow any more. Not mentioning twitter courtesy, someone thinks enough putting you in a list, follow it for goodness gracious.

Conclusion:

Maybe when this is read, our group and similar ones in the same industry will follow, friend up with one another on twitter. Seeing House Painting and Painting Contractors are not following one another as much as they could, what twitter was developed and invented for in the first place. From an SEO standpoint, having twitter account is a very positive thing, seeing rewards now with HubSpot’s  WebSiteGrader now giving credit having twitter account tied with a web site.
