As a Paint Contractor for over 30+ years, Painting Denver we have seen many windows in our time and line of work. Covering them with plastic sheathing 100%, not getting over-spray on any portion of windows and their frames, we know how important windows are in a home. Caulking each crack where window meets trim, after taping windows, leaves a nice straight painted line when finished.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of window companies installing new windows after the recent hail storms that hit Denver Colorado this summer of 09\’, and their relation to exterior paint. My biggest beef with window companies in general is most of them use non-paint-able silicone caulk, making their installations look great until it comes time to paint. This rubberized non-paint-able silicone caulk has to be scraped back out of cracks, and reapply a paint-able caulk that accepts latex and alkyd house paints. No paint either oil or latex will adhere to such rubber type silicones, having to repaint within months.
So, when window companies come out to replace windows, they all include re-caulking windows to trim. Demand a paint-able caulk, and not some cheap lesser brand they seem to all like using. Because it will cost much more having to remove this crap than the cost difference to apply with correct type exterior caulk.
Another problem using clear silicone caulk, is it will yellow over time, even if paint is not in the equation. A good caulk that should be used is either Sherwin-Williams 980 45 year premium exterior caulk and/or Kwal-Howell\’s Comex 45 year exterior caulk.
